An exercise in contrast
Our client’s vision was to build a 70m2 two storey extension to integrate with their period 18th century country home, contrasting the traditional building with an extension displaying modern materials and finishes.
An unusual challenge was presented by the decommissioned 8 metre water well right in the line of new footings. We immediately had to assess any potential structural impact and devise a practical engineering solution.
The existing swimming pool was covered and protected throughout the build. The heat source pump and filter equipment were disconnected, services re-routed to the new dedicated plant room – and recommissioned immediately after the build to make the most of the summer.
Key features of the project
Combining the up-to-the-minute style of the extension with existing heritage features and services provided some unusual challenges
- New superstructure with a block & beam floor, steel beam sub-frame and timber stud walls & ceiling
- A ‘concrete’ grey composite cladding was chosen for the external finish, combined with triple glazed sliding aluminium doors to both the garden pool terrace and first floor balcony, with its fabulous views across the Meon Valley
- The bespoke oak staircase required very careful planning at survey stage to ensure compliance with building regulations – while providing all the desired features of oak construction, open treads and structural glass
- The bespoke kitchen and leisure areas were kept warm by a newly upgraded oil-fired boiler feeding an underfloor heating system to minimise clutter and match available services
- All new and re-developed areas were fully decorated, with ceramic tiles fitted downstairs, oak effect LVT tiles upstairs and new composite decking to link to the existing outdoor patio
